Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present): Little is known of Ishka's background before she married Keldar. Over the course of her marriage, she gave birth to two sons: Quark and Rom. Out of all the males in her life, only Quark truly had the lobes for business. Despite this, she made sure both her sons learned the Rules of Acquisition and always gave good financial advice. She also tried to give said advice to her financially inept husband, but he wasn't keen to take advice from a female, leading to considerable struggles for the family.

After her husband died and her sons took off to seek latinum among the stars, Ishka began engaging in covert business ventures despite this being strictly forbidden to a female on Ferenginar. This eventually led her to run afoul of the Ferengi Commerce Authority, teaching her to make sure she hid her extensive profits far more carefully.

Eventually, after winning the female division of a tongo tournament, Ishka became involved with Grand Nagus Zek. As he was aging and his faculties were fading, she helped him keep up appearances and kept Ferenginar's economy running smoothly. She also took advantage of her position to push for extensive reforms granting females more rights before retiring to Risa with Ferenginar's future safely in the progressive hands of Rom.

Character's personality: Ishka is a force to be reckoned with. She has very strong beliefs and is not at all afraid of making them known. In particular, she strongly believes that females are every bit as competent as males and should be granted the same rights. She is uncompromising in this belief, initially refusing to sign a confession about earning profit because she felt doing so was an acknowledgement that what she did was in any way wrong.

While she pursues profit like a good Ferengi, she doesn't seem to be interested in profit for its own sake. She regards signing over the portion of her profits the FCA was able to locate as her own fault for not hiding it better. Her business ventures are more about the challenge a natural desire to make full use of her talents than anything else. She does not enjoy being told that she can't do something.

She gets along easily with people. While her desire for reforms is partly personal, she also thinks that Ferengi as a whole deserve better. She always has good advice for anyone who will listen, even if they're Dominion agents who have captured her and are intending to execute her. Her advice tends to blend finance with life as a whole in a way that only a Ferengi can.

Ishka is very devoted to her family, though she shows it differently to each son. Since she could tell Quark was meant for business, she did everything she could to make sure he was tough enough to cut it in cutthroat Ferengi commerce. Rom was completely different, so she nurtured his gentleness and hoped he would follow a different path. She engaged in parenting practices that would help her sons (teaching them the Rules of Acquisition) but not those that merely reflected a mother's subservient role (chewing their food for them). Ultimately, the only reason she signed the confession was to protect her family.

Character's skills/abilities/powers: Ishka has a strong aptitude for business, including large scale effects on an entire planetary economy. As a Ferengi, she also has far more adept hearing than a human.
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: PADD, a few strips of gold pressed latinum, earrings, copy of the Rules of Acquisition annotated with her own thoughts on them
Are you bringing your character to [community profile] ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: No
If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s): N/A
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? I am realizing I am a bit of a sucker for formidable older women and I think everyone saw me picking up Ishka coming. A Star Trek game seemed like a good fit for a Star Trek character. Ishka will be relishing in the freedom being away from Ferenginar offers even though she wants to be enjoying her retirement with Zek. I'm also looking forward to having her exposed to various cultures from other canons.

Writing Sample #1: TDM thread!
Writing Sample #2 (optional): War was good for business, but that really depended on your business. Quark might be doing well running a bar out on the front lines and arms dealers always prospered, but overall, Ishka was partial to Rule 35. Peace was better for more kinds of business. And when you had that diversity, you had growth. Growth meant profit.

The war itself had never touched Ferenginar, but the impact on galactic trade had been unmistakable. It would be over, one way or another, soon. She hoped it would be in favour of the Federation. Even if they didn't make better trading partners by far than the Dominion, she had a grandson in Starfleet.

They were really a rather scandalous family. Nog with the Federation, Quark the humanitarian and her stubborn insistenceon earning profit. Scandal was good for Ferenginar. They should add that to the Rules of Acquistion somewhere. Which would of course also cause a scandal, but that only proved her point.

Then again, with the scandal they were about to unleash, it was possible no one would even notice one more. War might let the same reliable businesses prosper, but peace was coming and she was going to make sure her world was positioned to start coming up with ventures no one had ever even thought about before. Ventures serving markets they'd been foolish enough to keep from existing.

And a new Ferenginar needed a new Nagus. She'd helped Zek get a lot done, but they were getting old. Ferenginar needed someone who would make sure the changes kept going forward, no matter how frightened some Ferengi were. Someone the old Ferenginar wouldn't have seen coming. Someone who'd never quite fit under the old ways. Someone a little... scandalous.

It was obvious, really. “Zekky, I think we both know who it needs to be.”
